Based in Edinburgh, Sonia D is an Irish singer songwriter whose fingerstyle picking and melodies take their influence from Folk and Indie Folk music.
Sonia's acoustic based music contains thought provoking lyrics and emotive vocals intertwined with hints of piano and strings. With her haunting tones and honest expression she sings about her life experiences and hopes that her music resonates as a form of escapism or therapy to any who listen. Listen to Sonia play live at our event on the 29th of July in Saughton Park.
1. Tell us about you/your music
Growing up in Galway, I started writing songs at the age of 10, completely immersed in the captivating influence of artists like Nina Simone, Pete Yorn, Fiona Apple, Glen Hansard, Jeff Buckley, Heather Nova, and Chantal Kreviazuk. Their music sparked a fire within me, inspiring me to express myself through heartfelt lyrics and melodies.
I am currently focused on releasing singles, an E.P. and an Album are also in the pipeline. My debut album 'Let go' is out now."
2. What do you like about Music in the Community?
I love that they support the local community and all the resources they provide about the music industry.
3. What do you like about the Edinburgh music industry?
I moved to Edinburgh from Ireland during the pandemic, and I love how inviting the Edinburgh music industry is to people who have made Edinburgh their new home.
4. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Growing as an artist and hopefully continuing to inspire and help others through music and help people follow their dreams.
5. Can you recommend any organisations that help musicians/any that you receive help or advice from?
Help Musicians is a great organisation especially for resources on mental health that I'm very passionate about.
6. Who inspires you?
There are so many artists to choose from that inspire me but top of my list would be artists who inspired me to be a songwriter in my teens like Chantal Kreviazuk, Heather Nova, Aimee Mann, Nina Simone, Fiona Apple and Gemma Hayes.
7. What advice would you give a musician at the start of the road?
Always go with your own intuition and don't compare your journey with others. Never give up on your dreams no matter what and always believe in yourself and know you bring so much to this life especially to the life of others.
